Final Narrative

Analysis of Painting:
The painting depicts an empty room with no furniture and no human presence. I saw it as a space of quiet solitude and contemplation, so I decided to create a series of rooms for a philosophy student, someone likely to use spaces that are quiet and still, with little distraction from the outside world. Despite the solitary nature of the painting, there is a harsh conflict occurring between the regions of light and dark. The open window allows a clearly defined streak of light to enter the room, and touch upon various surfaces. Parts of the room are directly illuminated, whilst others are dark and hidden in shadow. I considered how to approach this internal conflict for a philosophy student, and decided to examine two contrasting notions of philosophy: Eastern and Western philosophy (as a vast simplification), and how I could represent these different notions through architecture.
